How to Check Your Tire Tread

When life gets busy and you’re more focused on where you’re going than how you’re getting there, the tread depth of your tires can be easy to overlook. Many factors like temperature and rough surfaces cause tread to wear down over time and worn tread increases the risks of an unsafe ride along with decreased traction. For the best traction in both wet and dry conditions, you should monitor your tread depth closely. Here is a chart to help you determine when it is time to replace your tires:

4/32" or deeper

  Good

3/32"

  Replace Tires Soon

2/32" or less

  Replace Tires Now

When you bring your car in for service at GT Automotive, we can check your tire tread for you. If you want to check it yourself in between appointments, here are some easy ways:

The Penny Test

Simply insert a penny into your tire's tread groove with Lincoln's head upside down and facing you. If Lincoln's head is completely visible, your tread depth is less than 2/32 inch and it's time to replace your tires. If part of Lincoln’s head is covered, there is approx 3/32 of an inch of tread depth, meaning your tires should be replaced soon. Make sure to check several areas within the tread pattern, including central, outer and inner groves.

The Quarter Test

Insert a quarter into your tread groove. If the tread touches Washington's head, you have at least 4/32 of an inch of tread remaining which indicates that your tires do not need to be replaced.

Tread Wear Indicator

Another way to check tread depth is to look at the tires tread wear indicator bar that's molded into most tires. Each tire is typically equipped with six small tread wear bars that slightly protrude from the tire grooves. If the bar blends in with the test of the tread, then it is time to replace your tires.
